Zara had come to Diagon Alley with her mother and Jason in order to pick up her supplies. Jason had soon left them to join his friends but Zara stuck close to her Mum. They had gotten her books and robes and Zara had tugged her Mum to Magical Menagerie. She desperately wanted a pet. An owl.
The doorbell jingled as they entered and Zara ran off down the aisles looking at the cages and boxes and tanks. The letter had specified that she could have an owl, cat or toad. She had settled on an owl and so wandered off towards the cages looking at all the birds. Most of them had their heads tucked under their wing and were seemingly asleep.

Bert had entered the Magical Menagerie shop with a Ministry Member, he had felt slightly awkward to to him before. But soon Bert struck up a conversation, and things seemed to be going fine. Bert had question after question about the wizarding world, and in fairness the Member had answered them all without seeming bored at all.
Bert had been looking forward to this part of the trip, he was about to get his first pet. The Ministry Member had left Bert to look around the shop, whilst he stood by the door and waited. Bert was started to look for a cat, Owls creeped him out slightly. And he had always wanted a cat. They seemed like friendly, warm creatures to him. He started to look, not really taking notice of the people around him.

Zara had continued to look when something caught the corner of her eye. Not an owl but a boy. The shop had been empty until he walked in. Zara watched him quietly and saw that he was by the cats. She pulled a face. "Don't get a cat. They're useless. You should get an owl. They deliver your post and all sorts. My brother has an owl and I'm getting one too." Zara said to him.
She moved over to look at what he was looking at and pulled another face. Zara didn't see the fascination with cats. They were not cute in slightest. "I'm Zara, by the way." Zara introduced herself giving him a grin. "Are you going to Hogwarts? You must be going into your first year. So am I. What house do you want to be in?"

Bert looked up and grinned to see the girl, but frowned slightly as she went on about the cats. "But I don't like Owls, they're creepy. You know with that weird head thing. Bert tried to demonstrate, but was badly failing at it.
"The name's Bert." Houses? He hadn't heard about them yet. "What are they?" He asked her, felling slightly stupid not knowing what they were.

"Owls aren't creepy!" Zara said to him slightly offended. Though maybe he had a point. Turning their heads pretty much the whole way around could be a little off putting. But they were still better than cats. Cats acted like they were better than everyone.
"Nice to meet you Bert." When Bert asked what houses were, Zara just stared at him. "You don't know what houses are?" Zara grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him. "You must be Muggleborn. Ok, so there are four houses. Gryffindor for the brave. Ravenclaw for smart people. Hufflepuff for loyal people and Slytherin for um... well cunning people." Zara faltered slightly. "Jason's a Slytherin."

Bert frowned at Zara. "Yeah they are!" The owls in here were creeping him out, and he just wanted to get away from them, but not until he found the perfect cat for him. They were furry creatures, something that he would be able to hold, and stroke when he got bored.
Bert was slightly taken aback by all that information. "Oh.... right...." He wasn't sure what house he would want to be in though. "So how do you get into one of these house then?" Bert asked, he was curious. He wanted to find out more, like an excited child at Christmas. All this was new to him, and he wanted to find out everything that he could.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

"No they aren't." Zara told him adamantly. She didn't want a fight with this boy but if he was going to pick at one then so be it she would tell him what she felt.
"They have this hat thing. And they call your name and you sit at the front of the school and they put the hat on you. And it like looks into your mind or something. And J told me you can't even lie to it. It just knows. It knows what you think and then in a few minutes it just yells out your house." Zara had heard the stories from Jason. She was nervous about her sorting. She had no idea where it would put her and she just hoped it would find her a house that she would be happy in.
"Anyway, you can't get a cat if we're going to be friends Bert. Because if I get an owl I don't want your fur ball eating it." Zara told him with a definite nod. An owl was obviously going to be of more use to him.

Bert dropped the argument for now, he would have to come up with a better arguments. Owls were just something that never were going to appeal to him, no one could do anything about that. And he was getting an Owl anytime soon either.
Bert swallowed, "It know everything?" Bert didn't like the thought of something looking into his mind. And knowing all about him, and all his thoughts. It was slightly strange, but he guessed that it was what the wizarding world was like. And he was soon going to have to get use to it. If it was the way thathe was going to get sorted with the house, he would deal with it. But it still made him slightly nervous.
Bert looked down at his letter, he didn't want to lose a friend before he had even made one. "How about a toad then!" Bert was getting excited and started to bounce up and down. "Yeah, a toad would be so cool!"

Zara gave a definite nod again. "It can tell what you're thinking. But it doesn't like tell the school or anything. The only thing it says out loud is your house." Zara reassured him. She didn't know if it was true but her brother never lied to her so she was pretty sure it was all true.
Zara stood looking at him before saying. "No one takes toads. They are the most useless out of the three. At least a cat could catch a mouse." Zara explained to him. And yet she was certain that Bert was going to end up with a toad. Call it gut feeling or call it being a Seer. A toad seemed to fit him.

Bert relaxed a little, the thought was slightly more appealing now. He didn't mind so much if it wasn't going to tell anyone. It made him feel more comfortable in a way, there were a lot of things that he didn't want other people to know, and nor did they need to know.
Bert frowned. "I am getting a toad!" He said firmly. Before wondering off to go and look at the toads. They actually seemed a lot nicer than a cat or an owl. A better idea to get, he didn't care if Zara said that they were useless.

Zara couldn't help roll her eyes. Fine, fine. If he wanted a toad, at least it wouldn't eat her owl. "Ok, well you look at the toads and I'll look at the owls." Zara said to him. She wandered away to look back into the cages. There were plenty of different owls around. There were owl triplets but she wasn't sure if she was allowed to have three.
"Oo, I like this one." Zara said. It was a jet black owl about the size of her palm. Still young. They could grow together. "I'm taking this one." Zara said. She reached up and took the cage off the shelf causing the owl to flutter slightly.

Bert looked around, trying to find the perfect toad. Some of them just seemed to be a bit angry and upset. he didn't want a toad like that, he wanted a happy toad. At last he found one, a fire belly toad with specks on his back. It seemed to be just a baby, and Bert would want to watch it grow up.
"Are you sure you want that one? Bert said cocking his eyebrow. "I'm having this one!" Bert shoved the toad in Zara's face. "Go on! Touch it!

"Yes, I'm sure I want this one. Why do you ask?" Zara asked him frowning and looking back at the owl in the cage. When Bert thrust the toad at her she blinked a few times before hesitantly reaching out and touching it gently. It was wet and she pulled a face before wiping her fingers on Bert's arm. "Wonderful." Zara mumbled.
She then put the cage towards Bert, "At least mine is cuter." Zara said with grin. She then glanced over to see her Mum was waiting. "I should probably get going. I'll see you later. I'll find you on the train!"
